The Way of the Monk
For centuries the warrior monks have lived a secluded life in a sacred valley way up in the misty mountains of the Blue Valley. Shaped by hardship, war and famine, their existence has been a taxing struggle for survival. Yet for more than a thousand years their life was determined by their aspiration for higher tiers of insight, meaning and enlightenment. From the beginning, their Enpa was a center of light and wisdom, their venerable sensei and firm anchor. Generations of warrior monks have been trained and tried by this insightful father figure to carry the precious legacy of their culture, ways and knowledge to ultimately defend the realms of Tibia when the time comes. With their sole purpose to build and lead armies to battle against an overwhelming and unnatural foe, their numbers dwindled over the years.
A perpetual war to escape the yoke of terrible ancient beings, endlessly crossing the border to our reality, ended with the closing of a rift between the world of Tibia and theirs. The cost was high, however, as the monks were decimated and their Enpa, Gaan, disappeared. Reaching the highest state of enlightenment, he transcended his physical form and entered a dangerous twilight of knowledge and soul: Sempi-Enpa. With the premise of ultimate power, he attained control over every pathway of reality and could have closed the rift to seal the intruders. However, drunken with might and overwhelmed by infinitely heightened senses, a long banked lust for revenge tainted his judgement. With one crushing blow he threw the invaders out and rived their reality. The vile act caused tore his soul asunder, burrying his soul in a distant reality fold.
While the toll of this cataclysmic event was unfathomably high and with not many warriors left in the valley, the remaining monks continued in keeping their culture and knowledge alive, anticipating a return of their former Enpa. A new Enpa followed, and another and one more. Yet, none of them ever attempted to reach the highest state of enlightenment. Only one entered the stage of Dhar-Enpa, leaving the physical form of its body without touching the state of Sempi, the core of power in total equilibrium. Many hold that the Sempi-Enpa will return as a beacon of insight, others apprehend that this coming will be one of chaos and destruction.
The current Enpa advocates a new way: "For growth cannot be endless but has to adhere to a cycle as all living things, enlightenment shall bloom in full, then strike a balance." And: "To preserve balance is to carry forward, nurture and shape life, to bring harmony to the mind and order to chaos."
The tenets of the monks are rooted in the belief and veneration of the unity of Uman and Zathroth. All extremes determine each other and ultimately chime together to strike a balance. Some extremes have to be lived and experienced, others consciously limited. While unlimited destruction can lead to chaos and violence, unlimited creation can lead to false idols and complacency. Monks strife to balance existence and hone their inner harmony. It would be immensely difficult to get a stoic monk to lose temper. However, if circumstances necessitate action, warrior monks can be the most formidable foes.
