On the Alleged "Overlords of Bone"
Excerpt from "A Treatise on Misapplied Necromantic Theory" by Magister Eredon Thul, Adjunct Scholar of the Edron Academy
It has come to my attention that certain "necrological theorists" (I hesitate to call them researchers) continue to circulate the notion of so-called Bone Overlords, entities supposedly predating even the known strata of Bonelord evolution. These imaginary colossi are described as towering intellects and the alleged progenitors of all skeletal life.
The "evidence", if it may be called such, consists chiefly of fractured tablets, apocryphal monastic records, and the hysterical ramblings of adventurers who claim to have heard "voices from beneath the marrow of the earth."
One particularly ridiculous manuscript, the Cranial Codex, asserts that these beings "woven thought into bone and thus transcended mortality itself." A charming idea, no doubt ... and just as credible as the infamous "Ethereal Architects" or the equally laughable "Flesh of the World" hypothesis popular among certain Yalahari mystagogues.
No reputable scholar has ever verified the existence of such Overlords, nor has any specimen been unearthed that would indicate the presence of a skeletal structure on that scale. One might as well believe in the "Eyeless Kings of the Deep Sea" or the "Walking Relics of Draconia" - both of which are convenient fables invented to frighten novices and attract funding.
Still, I will grant that the myth persists because it satisfies a certain dark fascination: that somewhere beneath the catacombs, behind the veil of death itself, there still exist minds vast enough to command death as a craftsman commands his tools. It is, perhaps, comforting to imagine that even decay obeys an order greater than chaos.
But let it be stated, for the record and the sanity of the Academy: until one of these so-called Overlords deigns to submit a paper for peer review, I shall regard them as fiction, fit only for those who mistake myth for scholarship.
